FAQ

  • Last year there were two methods of review, face to face curator reviews, and a FotoDC panel; why is there only one curatorial method this year? FotoDC is always looking for new and innovative ways to interact with photographers. We found that the face-to-face reviews limited the number of photographers able to participate. It is our goal to streamline the process and to include as many photographers as possible.
  • Do I have to upload more than one portfolio? No, FotoPage is an online portfolio and directory platform geared towards providing exposure to photographers. If you are only interested in Uncover/Discover, then you are free to create one portfolio. The cost will remain the same for one or five portfolios.  However, we encourage photographers to populate all portfolios for ongoing exposure.
  • How many photographers will be selected by the curators? The number of photographers selected is at the discretion of the curators, but we anticipate approximately 10-15 photographers for Uncover/Discover 2012.
  • Uncover/Discover was free in 2011, why is FotoDC charging this year? In 2011, FotoDC received a grant to present the Uncover/Discover Series. Due to its success, FotoDC decided to make it part of the year round programming despite receiving no outside funding this year. In addition, we are a non-profit arts organization and require funds to run our programs.
  • How long does a FotoPage subscription last? One year. Please refer to FotoPage for more details.
  • Why do I have to print and mount my own work? The presentation of an image is part of the creative process for photographers. It is our goal to allow photographers to showcase their work in the manner they envisioned without setting limitations.
  • Will there be exposure for my work even if I am not selected for Uncover/Discover? Yes! With thousands of page views per day, your portfolio will be exposed through the FotoDC website and FotoPage. Along the way we will also feature images on FotoNews and Facebook. In addition, FotoDC will select work for exposure throughout the year.
  • FotoPage allows up to five (5) portfolios, will curators look at those images as well? No, curators will only review the first portfolio titled Uncover/Discover.
  • Will I retain ownership of my images? Yes, you retain the copyright to all your images. Selected entries may be used by FotoDC, a non-profit organization, to promote the Uncover/Discover series.
  • Will my images be sold? No, FotoDC will not sell your images. If collectors wish to purchase one of your images they will be referred to you and will contact you directly.
  • In what format should I upload my digital images? Please refer to FotoPage for more detailed information.
  • I don't live in MD, VA or Washington, D.C., may I enter this call for entries? Unfortunately no, this call for portfolios is restricted to regional photographers.  Join our mailing list for updates to programming open to photographers outside the D.C. regional area, including the Annual International Awards Competition launching on July 1st.
  • What are my chances of being selected? It depends upon the number of entries and the strength of the work submitted.
  • What are my payment options? Payment can be made through your PayPal account or via credit card. We do not accept checks or cash.
  • When will winners be announced? Selected photographers will be notified on or before Friday, August 3rd.  A public announcement will follow shortly thereafter.
  • I am under 18 years old, can I participate in Uncover/Discover? No, you must be 18 years of age or older to submit a portfolio.  Young photographers are encouraged to enter the FotoDC Youth Photo Contest sponsored by The Washington Post. This competition launches in early September and offers cash prizes and exposure to the winners.
