FAQ

WHAT IS FOTODC? FotoDC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide exposure for photographers and to make diverse, high-quality photography accessible to audiences through the exhibition of inspiring and provocative images, dynamic programming, and collaborations with the local and international community.

WILL I RETAIN OWNERSHIP OF MY BOOK AND IMAGES? Yes, you retain the copyright to your self-published book and all images.

WILL YOU RETURN MY PRINT BOOK? Print book submissions will become part of the FotoDC FotoBook Library.  Books within the FotoBook Library are culled for exhibitions and displays.  If, however, you would like to have your book returned, you must include a self-addressed and stamped envelope.  Envelopes with insufficient postage will be discarded, and the book will become part of the FotoBook Library.  Once your book has been contributed to the FotoBook Library it becomes a permanent part of the collection and cannot be returned in the future.

WHAT IS AN ENTRY? An entry consists of an online entry form, one self-published photography printed book or ebook, and the appropriate entry fee.

WHAT IS A MULTIMEDIA EBOOK? A multimedia eBook entry is a single self-published photography book in PDF or EPUB format that may include audio, video, links, and interactive features.

WILL MY BOOK BE SOLD? No. You retain copyright to your book and the Sponsors may not sell your book for a fee. Winning entries may be used by FotoDC, a non-profit organization, in connection with the FotoBook Competition and promotion of the FotoBook Competition for five years.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF BOOKS I CAN ENTER PER CATEGORY? No, you may enter multiple books per category, as long as each bears a distinct title.
HOW DO I SUBMIT MY FOTOBOOK OR EFOTOBOOK? Print books must be submitted via postal mail, and ebooks must be submitted online.  Detailed instructions will be sent to you via email once you have registered for the competition at www.fotobookcompetition.fotoweekdc.org.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I’M NOT SURE WHICH CATEGORY MY BOOK FITS INTO? Choose the category that is most appropriate for that book.

IN WHAT FORMAT SHOULD I SAVE MY EBOOK? Ebooks must be saved in EPUB or PDF format as ‘unlocked’ or non-DRM (Digital Rights Management) files without restrictions on sharing, printing, or copying.  This condition exists strictly for the purposes of judging. Please ensure that you embed your contact and copyright information into the file when saving.  Further instructions will be sent to you via email once you have registered for the competition at www.fotobookcompetition.fotoweekdc.org.

HOW LONG CAN MY BOOK BE? There is no limit to the length of your book entry. However, multimedia books that include video components must not exceed a total of 3-5 minutes for the entire book.

I DON’T LIVE IN MARYLAND, VIRGINIA OR WASHINGTON, DC - MAY I ENTER THIS CONTEST? Yes, this contest is open to photographers worldwide.   Competition is void where prohibited.

WILL THERE BE AN AWARD WINNER IN EACH CATEGORY? Yes, each category will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF WINNING? That depends upon the number of submissions.

WILL I BE ABLE TO ENTER BY MAIL? No. Only online registration will be accepted.  Once you have completed registration, your e-confirmation will include instructions for sending print books by postal mail and submitting ebooks online.

CAN I PAY BY CHECK? No, all submissions must be paid for electronically.

WHEN WILL THE WINNERS BE ANNOUNCED? Winners will be notified via Email on October 8th.

CAN I ENTER THE SAME BOOK IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY? No.  Each book may only be entered in a single category, in either print or ebook form.
WILL I BE ABLE TO UPDATE MY REGISTRATION INFORMATION? No.  The photographer name and book title that you register with will be used to identify your print or ebook.
