Avi Gupta - Exhibiting Artist and Director of Photography, US News & World Report REGISTER NOW

Avi Gupta works both as an exhibiting artist and as Director of Photography, Publications at U.S. News & World Report where he has over 13 years of experience. His images have appeared in major publications like The Washington Post and The New York Times, and have been exhibited across the US including the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the Leroy Neiman Gallery at Columbia University in New York and abroad at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art in Norwich, UK. Alongside private collections, his work is held in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in Washington. In elementary school, he received many “gold stars” in art class. Avi is happy to look at all types of work. He is most interested in bodies of work where the idea, theme, concept is significant.


 

Bill Crandall - Photographer REGISTER NOW

During his early career as an editorial photographer, Bill Crandall's images appeared in major publications worldwide and won awards from the National Press Photographers Association.

His more recent emphasis has been on personal long-term projects that balance art and documentary, a return to his creative roots that evolved from his disillusion with the formulas of media photography. Crandall recently published his photobook The Waiting Room, from a ten-year project looking at everyday life in the post-Soviet republic of Belarus. He has exhibited in the US and Europe and has received grants in support of his projects. A selection of The Waiting Room photos was chosen by Philip Brookman, Senior Curator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, for FotoDC’s 2011 FLASH exhibition, and Crandall was a guest lecturer during last year's FotoweekDC.

Crandall studied photography at American University and Corcoran School of Art in Washington, as well as at private workshops in Maine and Prague. He is a founding member of Metro Collective, a group of twelve international photographers who work in the artistic documentary tradition.

Crandall has also been a curator, photo editor, and photo workshop instructor. Currently he continues to freelance and teaches photography at Maret Schooin Washington DC. Bill will review all levels of work. He is most interested in documentary/photojournalism and fine art.


 

Brigitte Reyes - Founder and Director of Reyes + Davis REGISTER NOW

Brigitte Reyes is the founder and director of Reyes + Davis, an art consulting business in Washington DC that produces and curates independent exhibitions. Established in 2008, Reyes + Davis represents emerging and mid-career artists who work in different media.

A native of New Mexico, Ms. Reyes is a long time resident of Washington, and active over 30 years in the art community as an artist, teacher, gallerist and advocate. She attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design. She has also served as board member on non-profit art-centered organizations, like Transformer and Arts Coaltion for the Dupont Underground, and is presently on the Advisory Council of the Save the Corcoran campaign. Ms. Reyes welcomes reviewing fine art photography on all levels.


 

Carol Guzy - Staff Photographer The Washington Post REGISTER NOW

Carol Guzy was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  She lived there until 1978 when she completed her studies at Northampton County Area Community College, graduating with an Associate's degree in Registered Nursing.   A change of heart led her to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale to study photography. She graduated in 1980 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Photography. While at the Art Institute, she interned at The Miami Herald and upon graduation was hired as staff photographer. She spent eight years at the newspaper before moving to Washington, DC in 1988 where she is currently a staff photographer at The Washington Post.

Her assignments include both domestic and international stories and documentary reportage.   She has been honored twice with the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for her coverage of the military intervention in Haiti and the devastating mudslide in Armero, Colombia.  She has received a third Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for her work in Kosovo as well. She is the only journalist to ever receive a fourth Pulitzer for coverage of the Haitian earthquake in 2010.  She has been named Photographer of the Year for the National Press Photographers Association three times and eight times for the White House News Photographers Association and has earned other prestigious awards in her chosen profession of photojournalism. Carol welcomes reviewing work on all levels and prefers photojournalism, documentary, fine art and nature photography.


 

Carol Johnson - Curator of Photography, Library of Congress, Prints and Drawing Division    REGISTER NOW

Carol Johnson is a curator of photography in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress.  The Prints and Photographs collections number over 14 million images.  While international in scope, the collections are particularly rich in materials produced in or documenting the history of the United States and the lives, interests, and achievements of the American people.  Past acquisition projects have focused on AIDS, environmental landscape photography, September 11, 2001, and Hurricane Katrina.  One of our current acquisition themes is food in contemporary photography.  Ms Johnson co-curated "Down To Earth: Herblock and Photographers Observe the Environment, on view at the Library of Congress, Thomas Jefferson Building, through March 23, 2013.  Ms. Johnson has a BFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art and a MLS from the University of Maryland.

Have served on various charitable boards including Sasha Bruce Youth Work, Children's Hearing and Speech, Maret School and the Geraldine Livingston Foundation.  Native to Washington, DC. Daniel Milnor - “Photographer at Large” for Blurb, Inc. REGISTER NOW

Daniel Milnor is currently “Photographer at Large” for Blurb, Inc. the world’s premiere print-on-demand publisher. He splits his time between the smog-choked arteries of Southern California and the spiritual landscape of New Mexico. Milnor is a former newspaper, magazine and commercial photographer who now works primarily on long-term projects. His work has taken him from the rural corners of the United States to Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

An early adopter of select technologies such as print-on-demand books and magazines, Milnor has created and published over one hundred unique titles, including the recently released “Manifesto Magazine,” which showcases the world’s best documentary photography.

Milnor’s writing and photography has been featured in Camera Arts Magazine, Black and White Magazine, Life Magazine, Zone Zero, Flash Flood, Finite Photo, Resolve, Hasselblad Gallery as well as many others.

Additionally, Milnor is the author the blog Smogranch which allows him to speak his mind, post his mother’s poetry and bring together like-minded people around the globe.

His work is in the collections of both The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The George Eastman House. Dan prefers to review entry, student and advanced work. He will review anyone except fashion and celebrity, is best at documentary and portraiture.


 

David Adamson - Owner of Adamson Editions, Washington DC    REGISTER NOW

David Adamson is a Tamarind certified Master Printer. He started Adamson Editions in 1979 as a lithography studio. In 1993 David bought his first Iris 3047 printer and became one of the first digital ateliers in the country. Since then the studio has grown and expanded several times. Adamson Editions has collaborated with some of the most interesting and influential artists working today and our prints hang in many private and public museums and collections.  David will review student and advanced work. He is interested in all work specializing in fine art.

 


 

David Hicks - Photography Editor, Washingtonian Magazine REGISTER NOW

David Hicks is the photography editor for Washingtonian Magazine.  A native Washingtonian, he grew up mostly in Middleburg, VA, and now lives in Bethesda, MD.  He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. His photo-editing career began at stock agency Uniphoto/Pictor in 1994. In 1996 he landed at the White House as a photo editor for Clinton.  More recently, he was a photo editor at Washingtonpost.com and deputy photo editor at USA Weekend.  He regularly reviews photography portfolios for CDIA/BU, Corcoran College of Art and Design, Rhode Island School of Design, and NYC FotoWorks. David welcomes all levels of work in portraiture, photo journalism and photo essays.

Fabian Goncalves Borrega has been the Exhibit Coordinator of AMA-Art Museum of the Americas, since 1998. The AMA is a museum dedicated to showcase contemporary art of the western hemisphere. Mr. Goncalves Borrega curates the AMA's contemporary photography program.

Dedicated to the arts, the Museum preserves, studies, and exhibits works by outstanding artists and carries out other activities of an educational nature, which increase understanding and appreciation of these cultures. The museum's permanent collection of 20th-century Latin American and Caribbean art is one of the most important collections of its kind in the United States. Equally important is its growing collection of contemporary photography.

Mr. Goncalves Borrega is most interested in reviewing developed and innovated bodies of work suitable for exhibitions. All types of imagery are welcome- from documentary to landscape, still life to conceptual. Aside from offering criticism and critique of the photography itself, Mr. Goncalves Borrega will evaluate whether the artworks are suitable for a solo or group exhibition in the Photo-gallery.


 

Frank Van Riper - Photographer, Author, Lecturer and Columnist REGISTER NOW

Frank Van Riper is a nationally know documentary and commercial photographer, author, lecturer and columnist. Author of several bestselling books, his work is in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of American Art and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine. For 19 years, Van Riper was the photography columnist of the Washington Post. His column, Talking Photography, is now available online at www.TalkingPhotography.com.

A former journalist and 1979 Nieman Fellow at Harvard, Van Riper is a popular teacher and lecturer and leads photography workshops in Maine, Umbria and Venice with his wife and professional partner, Judith Goodman. Most recently, they were co-authors of the bestselling book, Serenissima: Venice in Winter. For the past nine years Van Riper has been on the faculty of Photo Works at Glen Echo Park, Md.

Before leaving daily journalism for photography, Van Riper was the White House correspondent, national political correspondent, and Washington Bureau news editor of the New York Daily News. He is a native New Yorker and 1967 graduate of the City College of New York. In 2010, he was inducted into the CCNY Communications Alumni Hall of Fame. Frank prefers reviewing student or intermediate photographers working in documentary, street photography or portraiture.


 

Gordon Stettinius - Founder of Candela Books REGISTER NOW

Gordon Stettinius founded Candela Books, a publishing company, in 2010 and has produced three monographs - Gita LenzSalt & Truth by Shelby Lee Adams, and Sunburn by Chris McCaw.  Candela Gallery opened in 2011 in the Downtown Arts District of Richmond, Virginia, and exhibits the work of nationally respected photographers in their newly renovated gallery.

As a photographer, Stettinius has been exhibited nationally and internationally and his work can be found in both private and public collections, and he is a winner of the 2009 Theresa Pollak Award for Excellence in the Arts.  Stettinius is represented by Robin Rice Gallery in New York and Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, Virginia.  Stettinius is also an emeritus member of 1708 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia and an adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University.

His interests include analog photography, alternative processes, toy cameras, humor, people who think differently, people who photograph their families. As a gallerist and publisher, he is less interested in commercial work, landscapes, nudes...  but in his experience as a commercial photographer and in stock photography afford him some insights into marketing and promotion of all types of work.


 

Jacqueline Hiersteiner - Jacqueline Hiersteiner Consulting, Art and Design Consultant REGISTER NOW

Jacqueline Hiersteiner is an independent Washington art and design consultant.  For five years, Jacqueline was the founding director of Hamiltonian Gallery, which focuses on innovative exhibitions and professional development for emerging artists.  Jacqueline Hiersteiner is currently obtaining her MA from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. She will review emerging artists and cutting-edge contemporary photography work.

 

 


 

Kainaz Amaria - Multimedia Team, National Public Radio (NPR)    REGISTER NOW

Kainaz has a B. A. in international relations and political science from Boston University and an M.A. in photography from the School of Visual Communication, Ohio University. In 2010 she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Mumbai, India.

Her images and multimedia collaborations have been recognized by contests including CPOY, Women in Photojournalism, Atlanta Photojournalism Conference, the National Press Photographers' Contest and the South Asian Journalist Association. She was named a Chips Quinn Scholar in 2007 and was a graduate teaching assistant at Ohio University.

Her work has been feature in Vogue India, The New York Times, Reuters, National Public Road, Radio Netherlands Worldwide, GlobalPost, Marie Claire (USA), the St. Petersburg Times, US News & World Report, Inc. Magazine & Condé Nast Traveler.

Kainaz joined the multimedia team at National Public Radio (NPR) in December 2011, and is currently based in Washington, D.C. She specializes in photojournalism but would love to see all different types of work.


 

Karyn Miller - Director of Visual Art & Communications, CulturalDC REGISTER NOW

Karyn joined CulturalDC in 2007 and directs the artist selection and recruitment process at Flashpoint Gallery. Karyn collaborates with artists to provide exhibition and curatorial guidance as well as professional opportunities. Karyn has led several off-site public art projects at CulturalDC including Construct, a series of art installations in vacant retail spaces.

Karyn came to CulturalDC from Conner Contemporary Art, where she was the Gallery Director.  In her five years with Conner Contemporary, she organized and installed numerous exhibitions, liaised with clients and media and curated select exhibitions.

Karyn has served on panels and lectured at a variety of institutions including The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, University of Maryland, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Corcoran College of Art + Design and Catholic University. Karyn has curated and juried exhibitions at Civilian Art Projects, Orlando Museum of Art and Gettysburg College.

Karyn graduated with honors from The Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History. Karyn received a Master of Arts in Art and Museum Studies from Georgetown University during which she completed coursework at the Sotheby’s Institute in New York. Karyn looks forward to reviewing all levels of fine art photography.


 

Kathy Moran - Senior Editor, Natural History, National Geographic Magazine    REGISTER NOW

Kathy Moran is National Geographic magazine’s first senior editor for natural history projects.   A thirty year veteran of the Society, Moran has been producing projects about terrestrial and underwater ecosystems for the magazine since 1990.   At last count she has edited over 200 stories for the magazine.   Recent highlights include editing Nick Nichols’ story on Orphan Elephants for the September 2011 issue of NGM.  She was also project manager for the NGS/Wildlife Conservation Society’s award-winning collaboration of photographer Nick Nichols and Dr. Michael Fay’s trek across Central Africa.   The resulting stories were the impetus for the creation of Gabon’s national park system.

Moran has edited several books for the Society, including “Women Photographers at the National Geographic”, “The Africa Diaries – An Illustrated Life in the Bush”, and “Cat Shots”.   She was named “Picture Editor of the Year” for her winning portfolio in the 2006 Pictures of the Year competition and the 2011 Best of Photo competition.  Kathy will review all levels of work. She specializes in natural history coverages, but is happy to review all comers.


 

Lauren Gentile - Founder & Director of Contemporary Wing REGISTER NOW

Lauren Gentile, ISA, MAAB is the Founder and Director of Contemporary Wing. She was the former Director of Irvine Contemporary and a 2007 graduate of the Sotheby’s Institute in London where she specialized in the economics in the international art market, with expertise in valuation, art advisory services and art collection management. Ms. Gentile holds a Master’s in Art Business degree from SIA London and wrote her thesis on fine art as an alternative asset class and fine art investing; the work focused on the recent phenomena of fine art funds. She also has a thorough background in art history, is a certified personal property appraiser specializing in fine and decorative arts and holds two B.A. degrees in art history and international studies from DePaul University in Chicago. She has studied art history, Italian and German at The School of the Art Institute in Chicago, the University of Florence and the Goethe Institute. She is a member of the 1869 Society (Young Philanthropists) and The Contemporaries (Acquisitions) steering committees at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, ArtTable, and the Junior League. She will review student work.


 

Lisa Gold - Executive Director, Washington Project for the Arts REGISTER NOW

Lisa Gold has over 25 years of diverse experience in arts management, fundraising, development, programming, outreach, marketing, advertising and public relations.  With a career that began in Washington, DC, her previous roles have included Public Relations and Marketing Director at The Drawing Center, New York, NY; Director of Development and Communications at Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, NY; Outreach and Development Director at Apexart, New York, NY; as well as Associate Director and Account Management positions at advertising and marketing agencies in the private sector in Washington, DC and New York. She is currently a member of the GSA National Registry of Peer Professionals and has served as a panelist for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program, and the Arts & Business Council; as a national board member and the Chair of the New Leadership Alliance of the New York City Chapter of ArtTable; the Open Studios Director for the Downtown Arts Festival; and in various roles with a number of New York City visual arts organizations including Cabinet Magazine, SculptureCenter, and Exit Art.  Lisa will review all levels of work, but feels she is most helpful for emerging and mid-career artists. She is most interested in fine art photography, open to all genres.


 

Maxwell MacKenzie - Member of ASMP since 1981, Professional Affiliate of the AIA REGISTER NOW

Maxwell MacKenzie is a successful, award-winning professional photographer who, since 1981, has specialized in interpreting both residential and commercial architectural subjects for ad agencies, architects, interior designers, graphic design firms, developers, contractors, manufacturers, restaurants, hotels, newspapers & magazines.  His photographs have been widely published in all the architecture & design press, including on over 600 covers. Based in Washington and, in the summers, Minnesota, he has undertaken assignments all over the country and in over a dozen foreign countries.

Max spends a significant portion of each year on his personal, fine art work, which has resulted in numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums across the country, and three books: Abandonings (1995), American Ruins ~ Ghosts on the Landscape (2001), and Markings (2007).

Maxwell MacKenzie prefers to review advanced and professional work only and feels he would be most useful in reviewing “straight, old fashioned landscapes, cityscapes, aerials, architecture, interiors and of course, the figure.”

Michael has been with AARP since 2005, managing photo assignments and research for print and web. Michael previously worked as a photo editor and professional photographer, and his work has appeared in DC's Metro Weekly, as well as the Village Voice, the Advocate and the New York Daily News. Nicole Aguirre - Editor in Chief, Worn Magazine REGISTER NOW

Nicole Aguirre is a professional photographer and editor originally from Los Angeles, California. At the age of 22, upon graduating from the George Washington University, she founded her own art and fashion publication in Washington, DC titled Worn Magazine. Three years later the publication has over 10,000 readers in the metro DC area and is known for its bold covers, over-sized pages, and fashion spreads featuring local designers.

Nicole has lived and photographed in cities around the world including London, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Bali, New York, Washington DC and Seoul, where she spent a year learning Korean on a scholarship from the Department of Defense. Her photographs have appeared on Vanityfair.com, DC Magazine, and Latino Monitor among others.

Nicole recently launched a second photography-inspired venture, an ecommerce company called WornAbroad.com that makes street style photography shop-able and gives customers access to emerging brands from around the world. Nicole is willing to review student, advanced and professional work. She is most interested in reviewing editorial and fashion.


 

Peter Krogh, Photographer    REGISTER NOW

Peter Krogh has been a photographer for nearly thirty years, working for publications, agencies, corporations and NGOs worldwide. He loves to tell stories with words, still photos and motion imagery. He shoots people, architecture, He is author of the best selling book on workflow and image management, The DAM Book.  He served on ASMP’s board of directors for six years, and founded its Digital Standards and Practices Committee.

 

 


 

Stefanie Fedor - Executive Director, Arlington Arts Center REGISTER NOW

Stefanie Fedor joined the Arlington Arts Center as Executive Director in September 2011, bringing over 15 years of experience producing visual arts programming in Chicago, New York, Baltimore and Washington DC. Before joining AAC, she served as the Assistant Director of the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center where she presented over 80 exhibitions of contemporary art featuring the work of both emerging and internationally renowned artists. She has additionally managed and directed exhibitions programs at the Maryland Institute College of Art and New York University and has curated and juried exhibitions in Chicago, Baltimore, New York, and the DC metropolitan region.

She currently serves as VP of Membership the Board of Directors of ArtTable, a national professional organization for women in the visual arts, and is an adjunct faculty member in the Arts Management program at George Mason University.

Ms. Fedor holds a BFA in studio art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a MA in visual arts administration from New York University. She will review entry/student work and is most interested in conceptual work and threads of larger developed projects.
