More significantly, Web 2.0 is influencing photo culture around the world by connecting international audiences to art experiences, enabling the discovery of new work and presenting never-before-seen channels of expression and participation. Inspired by the Web’s innovations, Andy Adams has published FlakPhoto.com, an online art space that promotes photography from within the online community, since 2006. He’ll explore the intersection of online publishing, social media, and community collaboration in this lively discussion about photography in the Internet Era.

Prominent Russian artists Valera & Natasha Cherkashin lived through several historical periods in Russia, United States, Europe and other countries. Life and politics influenced their art and gave them new ideas for creativity. In their recent project Global Underground, the Cherkashins bring together the greatest metro stations from around the world to merge thirty-three subway systems into one. Their works have been exhibited extensively all over the world and their photography and installations became part of collections of major international museums.

Drawing primarily on the works represented in The Serial Portrait: Photography and Identity in the Last One Hundred Years (currently on view at the National Gallery of Art), this lecture will consider some of the key issues of photography’s engagement with serial self-portraiture. I will focus in particular on the proliferation of photographic self-portrait series since the 1960s by examining two central questions which have shaped the genre in recent decades: what is the nature of personal identity and what can a portrait tell us about a person today.

Join photographers Andrea Juan and 2012 International Awards Competition Winner Gaston Lacombe as they present work recently carried out in Antarctica, looking at similar subjects with different approaches. In their photography, both artists explore life and color in an Antarctica often assumed barren and white. While Lacombe documents the life and color that presently exists on the continent, Juan, in her installations, creates landscapes of the future, theoretical projections of what Antarctica might look like as climate change bring new lifeforms and vegetation to its shores.
